Montevallo’s Orr Park tree carvings, downed by Zeta, will be preserved

Wednesday’s high winds from the remnants of Hurricane Zeta felled two cedar trees in the Tinglewood section of Montevallo’s Orr Park - home to the unique carvings of artist Tim Tingle.

But don’t worry - the carvings will be preserved, the city says.

Tinglewood now encompasses 50 trees, with carvings that include a wizard, storybook characters, a unicorn, a dragon, and other figures. The artist added another two this year.

Tingle began the work back in 1993, carving figures into the cedar trees of Orr Park shortly after a storm had damaged a few.

“I just carved up one and left it in the park, and it caused a stir because nobody knew who was doing it,” he said. “And I did some more until I was caught. I expected they might throw me in jail but they named part of the park after me.”

Many of these old cedars were dying, dead, or at risk of being cut down. “Cedar will stand up to the elements,” he said.

However, two trees were felled by the most recent storm, said Shane Baugh, director of Montevallo Parks and Recreation. It’s not the first time this has happened. The city plans on preserving the carving portion of the tree and cementing it into the ground as it has done in the past, Baugh said.

“It’ll take a few weeks but that will preserve the carving,” Baugh said.

Tingle said the carvings “just happen," based on what he has to work with and his imagination. Tingle said he’s found a horseshoe inside a tree that had been left when it was a sampling, with the tree growing over it. A sculpture will sometimes take shape around a rotten patch of wood.

“It depends on what you find when you cut into the wood,” he said.
