Nov. 1—Rainbow City police continue to investigate after a 4-year-old child suffered a fatal gunshot wound at an apartment in the 100 block of Nichols Avenue about midday Friday, according to Chief John Bryant.

Officers were dispatched at 12:04 p.m. Friday, to a report that someone had been shot. When officers arrived they found the gunshot victim was the 4-year-old, Det. Jason Higgins said in a press release.

A Rainbow City officer performed CPR on the child until personnel from Rainbow City Fire Department and A-Med Ambulance Service arrived on the scene. The child was transported to Riverview Regional Medical Center, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police were on the scene at Hidden Creek Apartments for hours Friday afternoon.

The investigation is still ongoing and an autopsy for the child is scheduled for next week, Higgins said.

Bryant thanked the Rainbow City Police Department, Rainbow City Fire Department, A-Med Ambulance Service, the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office, Southside Police Department for their help with the incident and investigation.
