A Gardendale man sought on sex charges was captured Thursday following a chase by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force during which the suspect hit a bicyclist.

Matthew Lee Selby, who has been wanted for at least two months, was taken into custody about 4 p.m. He had outstanding warrants issued by Gardendale police for rape, sodomy and sexual extortion.

Task force deputies located Selby about 4 p.m. and tried to arrest him in the 9000 block of Tingle Cutoff Road in Dora, said Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Cliff LaBarge. As they approached the residence, Selby fled the scene in a pickup truck.

The pursued traveled into Walker County on Highway 78. Selby’s truck left the roadway near the Horse Creek Golf Course and veered onto a pedestrian walking path where he struck a bicyclist, a parked vehicle and law enforcement vehicles.

The bicyclist was treated on the scene and did not require hospitalization. Selby was taken to UAB Hospital to be checked out.

Selby has a lengthy criminal history dating back more than a decade. Last year he was arrested after leading lawmen on a chase in Brookside. At that time, police said, he had an outstanding theft warrant with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and additional warrants from Hoover and Adamsville.

During the 2019 chase, police said, officers saw him push a 14-year-old girl from his vehicle and then he jumped out of the moving vehicle.

LaBarge said Selby will face additional charges in connection with Thursday’s pursuit.
