Monday school closings: Hurricane Zeta power outages cause cancellations

Several school systems across Alabama have announced closures for Monday, after many buildings are still without power due to damage from Hurricane Zeta.

Zeta tore through the state on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, leaving thousands without power and trees down across roadways.

The storm made landfall on Wednesday afternoon in southeast Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds. One of the highest wind reports from central Alabama showed winds up to 62 mph in Talladega County. Other reports noted southeast Alabama winds at 47 mph in Dale County near Ozark.

On Sunday, Alabama Power said on social media that crews were still working to restore services. The company said at 8 a.m. there were 93,500 outages remaining across the state. East Alabama outages were down to 35,000; 26,000 in South Alabama; 21,000 in the Mobile area; and 11,500 in Central Alabama. Those numbers reflected about 80% of those who had reported storm-related outages had their power restored by Sunday.
