Teen girl shot when mistaken for intruder at east Jefferson County home

A teen girl was shot early Sunday when authorities said she entered her home and was mistaken as an intruder.

Jefferson County deputies responded at 2:15 a.m. to a home in the 5900 block of Debbie Drive in Clay on a report of a 15-year-old girl shot. When they arrived at the scene, they learned the girl and her friend were dropped off at the friend’s home earlier in the night.

Sometime shortly after 2 a.m., her parents heard the garage door open and thought someone was breaking into the home. The girl’s stepfather retrieved his gun and went to investigate.

When the two encountered each other, the girl was accidentally shot in the abdomen, said Sgt. Joni Money. She was taken to Children’s of Alabama with serious injuries.

Authorities said they believe the shooting is accidental but the probe is ongoing.
